The Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, or Old Joe, at the University of Birmingham is an iconic and easily recognisable part of the university campus.
The listed tower, a combination of brick and stonework, needed some restoration. Through test trials, we were able to determine that the best restoration solution would be to apply spore neutralising biocide and, after manual agitation, follow up with phases of steam cleaning.
The methods were approved by a conservation officer and the work on the tower was completed in 2019. In our video below you can see how we were able to bring out the original colours from the tower after removal of the organic matter that had built up on the tower’s façade for years.
